What if I don't know what I want to do with my career?
I will do my best to be as impersonal on this topic as possible. Not easy, given the subject matter.
I've always felt that your career has a way of finding you, and not the other way around. It's a lot like relationships in that regard.
So what do you do when you want to divorce your career?
Well, you have to have a backup plan, of course. So how do you figure out what that is?
If you're like me, you're spending a lot of time looking at articles like this one <- (click that, it's a link)
It's well written and detailed...but it's value really is pointing out how similar a lot of the new jobs are. And for making a very simple rule clear:
Your job may not define you, but you define your career.
What kind of person are you? Extroverted? Self-motivated? Boring? (That's OK.) Obnoxious? (That's also OK, as far as this mental exercise purpose is concerned.)
Do you like trendy things? Weird culture? Politics? Sports? Faith based stuff? Maybe stuff you don't want to talk to your family about for any number of personal reasons?
You need to find a career - or make your own as an entrepreneurial being - that satisfies your place in the world. I'm typing this at the crest of Coronapanic 2020, so what that is is probably in flux for you right now. Hell, what making a living means anymore is up to debate. We don't have a lot of clarity on how society or our culture works anymore.
A key question to ask here is: what would you do anyway?
If all you love is to play video games...MAKE ONE. And put it out there - it's easy! If you love sports, come up with an app that provides some service or vital information for your fellow fans and you. Learn Flutter and put it together today! If you love sex...you get the idea. :p
They say you get one life to live.
I say make the most of it.
It's easier said than done. We're all trying our best.
