Open Source Premium? Davinci Resolve and observations of the Open Source scene

First question in today's post:
Do premium open source platforms count as open source? I'm talking about stuff like Davinci Resolve, which is the only post-production solution supported by Apple aside from their proprietary products. It's mostly free, although you can buy a Studio edition for features you won't need unless you're working on the kind of project that has the budget to buy a Studio edition (not to mention the neato hardware that officially pays their bills).
And it's fantastic.
So is Blender, the 3D animation, 3D printing, and CGI tool that's also free and fantastic.
I'm a 2D guy - I always felt animation should be drawn on actual onion skin paper, or maybe done with clay puppets and a still camera (and Wes Anderson sold me on that stuff). 99% of what I like was done that way, so it makes sense that that is what I would gravitate to.
Having said that, if it ain't broke...break it! Besides, I'm not the hardest worker around, so things that are a) free and b) get the work I want done as quickly as possible are what the future is about to me.
In other words, digital animation is the ideal way to make animation the way Windsor McKay and Emile Cohl intended. 24 frames at a time (or the online equivalent).
3D is marvelous for backgrounds, and - ironically - for simple "flat" animations like what you see in commercials these days. Not to mention for technical stuff like 3D printing and similar technical applications (DIY manufacturing? Sure! Say no to "made in China" junk and make it yourself!)
Which leads to the question: who's good on the open source scene? Are we seeing fantastic talent endorsing tools that are not Adobe, Avid, or Apple?
Here's a Blender genius for you. I don't know where this video exists outside of twitter, so if someone knows, send me a comment.

The actual artist is on twitter as @mrdodobird. Had to look that up, because gdforbid we actually credit creative professionals on twitter.

Who else is amazing with, say, Inkscape or OpenToonz? Send me a comment! Don't forget links to Patreon or Artstation or Cartoon Brew or whatever.
Maybe we can start a thread somewhere of open source geniuses?

  1. Facebook and twitter suck eggs, so let's do blogs instead!
Here's a major talent in indie animation - this link bypasses some of her more...interesting commentary and goes straight to the GIFs. She uses Moho, so I guess I should check that out?
